Honduran banana exports worth over 70 million dollars

In the first two months of the year, Honduras exported 72.2 million dollars' worth of bananas, up 2.1% compared to the same period of 2014, as reported by the country's Central Bank.

The value of banana exports increased by $ 1.5 million (+2.1%), compared to the $ 70.7 million sold in the first two months of 2014.

The fruit's exports during the first two months of 2015 amounted to slightly more than 5 million 18 kilo boxes, compared to 4.9 million boxes in the same period last year, which represents a 1% growth.

In the first two months of this year, the price of a box of bananas averaged $ 14.35 according to the report, while in the same period of 2014 the average stood at $ 14.19; a 1.2% increase.

The United States and Ireland were the main destinations for Honduran bananas, since those markets bought 99% of the total.

Banana exports, one of Honduras' main agricultural products, totalled $ 456 million in 2014, a 7% increase in sales compared to 2013, when they amounted to 490.1 million dollars, according to official figures.
