Egypt: Cold wave causes 100-150% increase in vegetable prices

The recent cold wave and frosts in Egypt have resulted in a large increase in vegetable prices, of between 100 and 150%. Prospects, however, are for them to drop again by 100% over the coming weeks, as the weather improves. In contrast, fruit prices declined in an attempt to boost consumption.

Ibrahim Abdel Fattah, trader at Vegetables transit market, said that one of the vegetables registering the highest price increase were aubergines, which went from 0.70 to 2.5 pounds* per kilo in just 10 days.

Both chilli and sweet pepper prices have increased to between 3.5 and 4 pounds. Red onions, however, have registered a slight decline, from 2.25 down to 2 pounds per kilo. Meanwhile, tomato prices ranged between 15, 20 and 30 pounds per box.
