US (VA): Apple exports expanding in India

Officials say Virginia this year exported more than $1.6 million in apples to India as of September. The state first opened a trade office there in late 2011.

The announcement was made Friday while hosting a delegation of Indian apple buyers who visited to meet with apple growers and negotiate additional sales.

Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Todd Haymore says India has been a strategic focus area for Virginia's agricultural and forestry export growth.

India has the 10th largest economy in the world based on gross domestic product and is the second-most populous country with more than 1.2 billion people.

According to the Virginia Apple Growers Association, the industry contributes about $235 million annually to the state's economy.
