Carrefour returns to Algeria

After a 5 year absence in Algeria, French retail group, Carrefour, will open their first hypermarket in Alger next March. The investment reaches €10 million.

Carrefour arrived in Algeria in the mid 2000’s, associated with Algerian group Arcofina, but this ended in 2009 when Acrofina opened their own store, Ardis. They are not Carrefour’s only competition, private Algerian group Cevital also have a retail presence in Alger via their subsidiary, Numidis.

Carrefour will not stop with just one hypermarket in Alger and plan to open other hyper and supermarkets.

Hyper Distribution Algérie (HDA), the company operating Carrefour in Algeria, is 70% owned by the Algeria-Saudi Investment Company (Asicom) and 30% by Carrefour Tunisia. Asicom is owned in equal shares (50%) by the Algerian and Saudi States.
