Bulgaria: Significant drop in citrus prices

The citrus season already started in Bulgaria, and prices have significantly dropped over the course of last week. Oranges have registered declines of 21.3%, according to the State Commission on Commodity and Market Exchanges. 

At the beginning of the week, a kilo of oranges cost 1.50 Lev in the wholesale (1 Lev = 0.51 Euro) and by the weekend the price had dropped to 1.18 Lev. For their part, lemon prices have dropped by 10% and are currently available in the wholesale for 1.85 Lev per kilo. 

Mandarins are also becoming more affordable for consumers. Their price has dropped by 6.5% last week, down to 1.44 Lev per kilo.

Besides citrus fruits, apples, which are mainly imported from Italy, have also become cheaper in the Bulgarian markets. The decline has been of 3.8%, down to 1.02 Lev per kilo.

Meanwhile, prices of vegetables traditionally used in the winter have started to increase, according to figures of the Committee on Exchanges. Until a week ago, cabbage cost 0.53 Lev per kilo, while now the price is of 0.59 Lev. Pepper prices have increased by 0.10 Lev and are now available for 1.43 Lev per kilo.
