Jordan and Russia agree to increase bilateral trade

Last Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Jordan's King Abdullah II seeking to improve and develop bilateral relations between both countries.

Between January and May this year, the volume of Jordanian-Russian trade reached $239.2 million; a great increase compared to the same period in 2013.

This is not the first time Russia and Jordan's leaders meet. King Abdullah II visited Moscow on 9 April this year to discuss the prospect of joint projects in the fields of nuclear energy and military.

Cooperation between Russia and Jordan in the field of energy is part of the Kingdom's strategy to diversify its energy sources. There is currently a project for the construction of two nuclear reactors which is expected to be completed by 2020.

The latest meeting was held against the backdrop of the ban on European and U.S. imports enforced by Russia, which is currently looking for alternative suppliers of fruits and vegetables and other food commodities.
