EU estimates a large potato harvest

The potato harvest in the EU will be 4.4% larger this year than last year, MARS, the European Commission's research bureau in the area of agrarian products, estimates. This would be second largest harvest yield ever in the EU, besides 2011, reports the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) on its website.

This good result is mainly due to the fact that the harvest yields in Eastern Europe continue to rise as cultivation here is being concentrated more in the best cultivation. Progress in the area of cultivation and the optimisation of the use of assets contribute to the harvest here increasing. If you look at the five most important potato cultivating areas in Western and Central Europe (France, Great-Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany), the result doesn't look exceptionally good. But here too, an above average harvest of over 35 million tonnes of potatoes is estimated. That's around 3 million tonnes more than last year.

The MARS experts put there estimate into perspective by pointing out that it is still very early in the season and all kinds of things can change. The potato harvest mainly increases between August and September. But the start of the season is promising.
