Mexico: Michoacan avocado producers pay drug lords for protection

Michoacan Avocado Producers admitted that they must pay up to one thousand pesos per hectare to the drug lords for security so that their merchandise isn't stolen.

One of the producers, whose wouldn't disclose his name for safety reasons, said that the drug lords have filled the gaps left by the federal and state governments to provide security to producers in exchange for a fee.

The producer said that the drug lord in Michoacan's avocado producing area had decreed that producers with less than five acres would pay no fees.
