Spain: Floods damage 6,000 hectares of crops in Extremadura

Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias estimated that 6,000 hectares were affected by floods in Extremadura; a worrying issue, as the intense rains have caused "considerable losses" just when the campaigns should be about to start.

The organisation explains that it is still too early to assess the damage in the plantations, but crops will likely be spoiled and some irrigation channels and paths destroyed. It will also be impossible to meet the contracts agreed with the industry for crops such as potatoes or broccoli.

According to Cooperativas, fruit crops and tomatoes are the most affected varieties, but there is also talk about the loss of fertile arable land due to the violence of the water and they stress that there won't be enough time to fix the irrigation channels and prepare the lands.

Although not much room for manoeuvre is left due to the time of the disaster, the group affirms that growers from the region trust that they can still salvage the campaign.
