Cathy Phan - Mocchau Highland:

"We can maintain consistent supply due to production in both the north and south"

Mocchau Highland has farms in both the south and north of Vietnam, so it can supply its customers all year round with both the yellow and purple varieties.

"That gives us a special advantage at Mocchau Highland, which not all exporters in Vietnam have," explains Cathy Phan, Sales Director at the company. Normally, other export companies will only have passion fruit farms in the south of Vietnam. In the north, due to the cold climate, high altitude land above sea level, and big temperature difference between day and night, our passion fruit has a unique, delicious, and rich flavor."

Despite the two growing regions, passion fruit still has a peak season and a low season. In January and February, it is cold, so passion fruit production is lower, but in the remaining months, consistently high production levels can be maintained. The ideal temperature for passion fruit plants to grow well and produce high yields is 15-25 degrees.

"The weather in Vietnam in the highlands is very consistent, so it is very favorable for growing passion fruit. The fruit always has a delicious and characteristic flavor that no other place in the world has the same. Below 12 degrees, the plant will grow slowly, but the fruit quality is also excellent.

"To ensure that our fruits meet EU export standards, we have applied good agricultural practices with Global Gap certification for farms and Smeta Sedex certification for packing houses, as well as ensuring welfare for workers."

During peak months such as Christmas and New Year, Mocchau Highland exports 60-70 tons/month by air to European countries. During the low season, it is about 15-20 tons. The company exports passion fruit by air as a premium fruit in the European market.

In addition to passion fruit also exported by sea to countries such as the Middle East, China, and some Asian countries. However, the core market is still Europe, with high-value product positioning.

"We have exported to many European countries, such as France, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands, for more than 10 years, with France being a market that really favors passion fruit.

"Although in the European market, there are always alternative products such as passion fruit from South American and African countries, however, due to differences in climate and soil, Vietnamese passion fruit still has a special flavor, high brix and we always have our own customer base who love this fruit even though the airfare from Vietnam to the EU is much higher, and their demand is increasing day by day."

To reduce costs, Mocchau Highland also tested the option of shipping passion fruit by sea to Europe, but the long shipping time was a big obstacle.

"We are still maintaining the option of using air routes to ensure the safe transportation of fruits and the freshest quality to our customers. We mainly supply to fruit importers in the EU, from whom they distribute to wholesalers and retailers to take our products to cities and regions across the EU.

"In addition to passion fruit, Mocchau Highland also has Global GAP and Smeta certified farms for other fruits such as grapefruit, dragon fruit (white/red), avocado, and coconut.
