The current supply of asparagus is good, with several regions in production right now. This includes Michigan domestically, and on imports, Canada, Peru, and Mexico are also shipping the vegetable. However, both Canada and Michigan will be coming to an end of their production in the next several days.
"To date, asparagus production is the same or slightly ahead of last year," says Carlos Solf, vice president of procurement for Southern Specialties, adding that the quality of asparagus has been good from all regions. "Central Mexico is just starting and will be a factor."
For the company, it is shipping its product from Grand Rapids, Michigan, McAllen, Texas and also out of its Pompano Beach, Florida facility.
Seasonal timing compared to 2024
As for the timing of the season, the regions have all begun one to two weeks later than originally anticipated.
On the demand for asparagus, it is steady right now.
How about pricing? "Pricing on asparagus is $1 or $2 higher than in recent weeks," says Solf, adding that one of the biggest challenges is balancing costs against meeting the "sweet spot" for consumer demand for asparagus. "We can also expect asparagus markets to rise slightly once Canada and Michigan wind up."
