"The start of the pepper season was promising, with firm prices due to lower availability of Spanish peppers. The switch to Dutch products happened faster than usual, and retailers and other buyers seized the opportunity. We had good prices in the first weeks, but from week 18 onwards, that picture changed. The price trend collapsed, and it became increasingly difficult to achieve good prices," Marco Bergman of Harvest House reflects.
"What stands out this season is the high production with relatively few major quality issues. We're seeing that the crop is generally performing well. Many of our pepper growers have switched to organic growing mats made with coconut fibres. We've found this makes the plant more resilient and less susceptible to root problems. This cultivation method shows that, together, we're taking steps toward a more sustainable and future-proof crop," says the pepper specialist.
"The outlook for the coming weeks remains positive. We expect to maintain a high level of quality, even as temperatures start to rise. We're also optimistic about sales opportunities. We have a lot of volume available, and there is good demand in the market. With the summer holidays approaching, we do expect some hesitation from retailers. But we're not sitting still. We find a customer for every sweet pepper, even if we sometimes have to look a little further to do so!"
