A pair of Yubari melons fetched 1 million yen (approximately $7,000) during the first auction at Sapporo Central Wholesale Market in Japan on Monday. This reflects a reduction of 2 million yen compared to the previous year. The purchase was made by an Otaru-based company dealing in agricultural and seafood products. The melons, cultivated in Yubari, will be showcased in an Otaru shop until they reach maturity. They will be sliced and retailed by the week's end.
"Yubari melons really melt in the mouth, and they have a lingering aroma," commented a senior company official. "I expect both tourists and locals to enjoy them."
