The dry garlic export season from Egypt is about three weeks away, with some of the garlic that isn't completely dried being exported already, says Rayan El Sawy, Chairman of fresh produce exporter Egyptian-Emirati Import & Export: "We just finished fresh garlic and started with the dry garlic a few days ago. The product that we export now is about 80% dried, as the garlic is not 100% dried yet. The fully dried garlic will be available starting from May 15th. We're fortunate to have many agricultural lands in the cities of Minya, Beni Suef, and Assiut, which have a wonderful climate for growing both garlic and onions."
Overall, the Egyptian government is providing support to grow the garlic export industry, El Sawy explains. "The situation has been improving in recent seasons, as the government supports farmers and both small and large companies in the agricultural industry. We, at the Egyptian Emirati Company, are also distributing our networks throughout Egypt to develop and increase production, to provide the required quantity that our customers demand. Current demand is excellent, as we have contracts with our clients all over Europe, and we have a major strategic relationship with the largest dried garlic factories in Spain and Poland in particular."
For this season, El Sawy has hopes to expand his export markets for the dry garlic in both Europe and Africa: "Our main markets are Spain, France, Austria, Belgium, Poland, Portugal and Netherlands when it comes to the European territories, but we also export our produce to the Gulf countries. We are looking to enter all new European markets, such as Germany, Denmark, and Italy, but we'd also like to supply many other African countries."
El Sawy will attend the Mac Frut exhibition in Italy next month to meet his existing clients."I think we will be able to provide dried garlic until the end of November 2025, after which we'll provide peeled garlic throughout the year. Our main goal is to maintain the respect of our old customers, which opens up prospects for us to open new markets with new customers. Finally, I would like to inform everyone that we will be in Rimini, as we will be present at the Mac Frut Exhibition. We hope to see you there!"
