Matthieu Maxant, Sakata

"Making the needs of our partners and clients a priority"

Sakata was present at Fruit Logistica earlier this month, an "important event" that the company has been attending for several years. In recent years, the company has changed its approach and presented some new varieties. "We want to put our clients' needs back at the center of our decision-making, in order to guide our breeding programs. Fruit Logistica is an ideal event for identifying the needs of the entire chain: from plant producers to farmers, including buyers and decision-makers within the distribution chain," explains Matthieu Maxant, chief operating officer at Sakata Europe - Middle East - Africa.

The company intends to show its partners that it is supporting them "at every stage of their process, in every season, for any crop, from high-tech greenhouses to open fields, and from the Netherlands to Central Asia and Africa, via Spain and Morocco."

Metric F1: a cucumber that is productive and very bright
We presented the Metric F1 cucumber, which has all the characteristics needed for good production. It also has the ability to be very bright, a criterion that is increasingly important for supermarkets and consumers. This variety meets both farmers' expectations in terms of productivity and satisfies clients thanks to its visual quality, which makes it attractive on the shelves without the use of plastic film. The Metric F1 cucumber therefore allows us to show the value and the genetic gain that the variety can bring for distribution."

Orionit F1: the only Didymella-resistant variety
Another example is the famous Orionit F1 butternut, which won the SIVAL d'Argent in January. "With this new variety, we are targeting another part of the value chain: growers. It is a variety with a much sought-after resistance that has not existed on the market until now. It is resistant to Didymella, which is becoming increasingly difficult to manage in production. In addition to this resistance, it retains a high level of yield, is visually attractive, and has a good sugar content.

Txeco F1: a highly productive and resistant pepper with a long shelf life
Other products were also presented with the same objective, to meet the needs of several players in the chain. These included the Txeco F1 pepper variety, a Spanish-type square pepper with a high yield capacity and a very high resistance package for growers, as well as an attractive shelf life for the distribution chain.
