Patrick Meikle - Golden Bay Fruit

"We will double our volumes of Miranda this year, but that will still fall short of demand”

The New Zealand apple harvest is starting in parts of the country, at Golden Bay Fruit based in the north of New Zealand's South Island the harvest will start on the 10th of February.

"We will start with our Sassy variety, followed by early Royal Gala apples," said Patrick Meikle. "The size is looking better than last year and the quality is good, we have had no major issues this season. The markets are also looking good, stocks in Europe and the UK are lower than last year. We will benefit again this year from the absence of tariffs."

Golden Bay is looking at a big increase in the volumes of Sassy this year, "We are seeing a great demand for the Sassy apple in Asian countries such as China, Vietnam Taiwan, but also from the EU and UK. Miranda is our premium apple variety; it goes to a really niche market in Asia. There is nothing else quite like this apple, we will double our volumes this year, but that will still fall short of demand."

This will be the second year of commercial volumes for the Posh apple, "It is a really popular apple for gifting in Asia. Although we miss the Chinese New Year celebrations there are more festivals throughout the year."

Shipping and logistics
"Shipping is getting better, compared to a couple of years ago, but transit times are still too long. For this season we are not counting on the Suez Canal opening back up, but if it does then it will be a great benefit to us."
