The Prime Minister of New Zealand has outlined the government's future strategy for the nation's science system and the Crown Research Institutes (CRIs), including a significant focus on Plant & Food Research. A key initiative involves the establishment of new Public Research Organisations, with one dedicated to the bioeconomy. This organization will amalgamate Plant & Food Research with its sister CRIs: AgResearch, Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research, and Scion.
This unification underscores the integral role of the biological economy in New Zealand, encompassing the food and fiber sector and its environmental context. Leadership at Plant & Food Research is dedicated to the welfare of its staff and the continuance of high-caliber science during this transition. The organization is also committed to collaborating closely with partners and clientele to ensure ongoing research is not adversely affected.
Each of the four CRIs has a distinct core purpose. AgResearch focuses on enhancing the agri-sector's value chains for economic and environmental benefits. Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research aims to innovate in managing terrestrial biodiversity and land resources. Plant & Food Research seeks to elevate the horticultural and food industries for economic and social prosperity. Lastly, Scion is dedicated to innovation in the forestry and biomaterial sectors for economic and beneficial environmental outcomes.
