The Del Monte Foods facility located in Hanford, California is scheduled for closure within the upcoming months. This development was communicated to the Kings County Board of Supervisors through a letter, which outlined the plant's shutdown by the end of March. According to the document, the closure will result in the termination of employment for 378 workers starting March 28.
This notification was made in compliance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, necessitating a 60-day advance notice for mass layoffs. Initial reports about Del Monte's intentions to divest its Hanford tomato processing plant emerged last month. The Teamsters Union had anticipated that the layoffs could affect between 400 to 500 full-time positions. Financial challenges, including a significant debt burden and ongoing restructuring efforts at Del Monte, were highlighted by the Hanford Sentinel as contributing factors to the plant's shutdown.
