Since its introduction to the Mexican agricultural market in the 1990s, Mexico's blueberry cultivation has grown dramatically in recent decades, becoming one of the country's most representative agricultural products in international markets. Most of the country's blueberry production is concentrated in regions with temperate climates and fertile soils in the states of Jalisco, Michoacan, Sinaloa, and Baja California.
In addition to the domestic market, Mexican blueberries are highly valued in international markets such as the United States, Canada, and Europe, where consumers prefer them because of their quality and flavor," AZUD points out. However, this growth has also created challenges related to efficient water management, fertilization, and environmental sustainability.
GN Berries, a berry company with operations in Baja California, and Nayarit, is one of the most outstanding examples of technological innovation in blueberry cultivation in Mexico. The company was facing significant challenges related to water quality and efficiency in its irrigation system, which was affecting the productivity of its crops. Problems included the presence of particles and solids in the water, which clogged the emitters and hindered the uniform distribution of water and nutrients in the greenhouses. This negatively impacted the quality of the end product and increased operating costs due to wasted resources.
In search of a solution, GN Berries collaborated with Agritek and AZUD to implement advanced technology that could solve these difficulties. The proposed solution was the installation of the AZUD Helix Automatic 300 DLP filtration system, a technology designed to ensure efficient filtration and sustainable operation. This system effectively retains particles while optimizing water and energy consumption during self-cleaning processes.
Thanks to AZUD's technology, GN Berries' irrigation system regained its capacity to distribute water and nutrients homogeneously, which had a direct impact on the quality and uniformity of the crops. In addition, the system reduced the costs associated with maintenance and water consumption, thus improving the profitability of production. The implemented solution also reduced the environmental footprint of the agricultural operation, an aspect increasingly valued in international markets.
The implementation of this technology marked a before and after for GN Berries, positioning the company as a benchmark in the use of innovative solutions for agriculture. The results obtained included a significant increase in productivity, a notable improvement in the quality of blueberries, and a more sustainable and profitable production model.
GN Berries' case is a clear example of how adopting advanced technologies can transform agricultural production, especially in crops as demanding as blueberries. The collaboration with AZUD allowed them to overcome critical challenges, optimize resources, and establish a sustainability standard that other producers can follow.
As Mexico consolidates its position as a leading blueberry exporter, innovation and commitment to the environment will be essential to ensure the sector's long-term success. This case demonstrates that it is possible to combine profitability and sustainability in agriculture, offering solutions that benefit both producers and the planet.
