"We have about 20,000 kilograms of traditional clementines left to harvest. We expect to finish the sales campaign within 15 days, and immediately after that, we will start with the late varieties Hernandine, Mandalate, Tang Gold, and other native varieties. However, we are expecting a reduced supply of up to 50% for these varieties," says Floriano Convertino of Convif in Massafra (Taranto).
"Despite the controversy, production, and weather problems such as drought and lower-than-usual water levels, it was a satisfactory but not excellent season, during which we never fell below the threshold. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, we saw starting prices of 0.55 €/kg even for crops that were not of the highest quality. Currently, starting prices are around 0.50 €/kg on the tree."
While in central and southern Italy there was a physiological drop in demand after Epiphany, also due to the rush to harvest for fear of adverse weather conditions spoiling the fruit, in the northern regions the commercial frenzy has not stopped even after the festivities. "We continue to receive large orders from many northern cities such as Rimini, Bologna, Milan, and Turin. The price difference between central and southern destinations is 0.20/0.30 €/kg. We could see an increase in demand and supply as early as next week. Given the market trend, we have preferred to stop exporting, as the domestic market can safely absorb all the volumes."
