Interview with President Laporta

Greater trust in cooperation: the case of Consorzio Uva di Puglia Igp

"Many agricultural businesses have been applying to join the consortium lately to enjoy greater contractual guarantees or more profitable commercial opportunities. We are talking about 3-4 applications a day, so much so that we believe certified vineyards will reach 3,500 hectares next year, i.e. almost double the amount of the past campaign," reports Michele Laporta, president of Consorzio Uva di Puglia Igp

It is not just companies from Bari that are applying, but also from other provinces that grow table grapes, i.e. Foggia, Brindisi, Taranto and Barletta-Andria-Trani (BAT).

Uva di Puglia IGP gathers the Victoria, Palieri, Red Globe, Italia and Regina varieties. The consortium has also requested to widen the varietal catalog to include the grapes that characterize the national and international market such as Pizzutella, Black Magic, Fiammetta and Luisa.

"Such an increase in applications is mostly due to the ministerial recognition obtained by the Consortium, as well as to last year's commercial crisis, which has pushed companies to look for greater aggregation. Producers outside the chain in fact paid a higher price as they had to either send the produce to waste or undersell it. Both small and large producers are asking to join, so there seems to be greater trust in cooperation."
