The Peruzzo Group mainly sells kiwi fruit from Greece, Italy and France. But this year, the weather hazards have had a severe impact on production, foreshadowing a rather gloomy campaign. “One thing is for sure: we will be heavily penalized in the coming weeks,” explains Tony Saglietto, managing director of the Peruzzo Group. “The producing regions have experienced record rainfall,” explains Tony Saglietto, referring to the floods in Emilia-Romagna. “Italy has lost nearly 40% of its production and the damage is so severe that the kiwi plants have died. The two main cooperatives in the region were badly hit and in water for 10 days.” Chile is also experiencing a shortage of kiwi fruit, again due to the climate.
Greek kiwi fruit on the shelves?
The French production is quite good this year, but Spain has lost nearly 20% of its production. “Everyone is going to turn to Greece, especially Italy, which has the highest loss rate. Prices will also be extremely high.” For the time being, the company can still provide a steady supply but will “not be able to serve additional clients.”
The Peruzzo Group is expanding its range with new varieties of yellow and red kiwis, currently being planted in the Gard region of France. Marketing is scheduled for 2026.
