"The situation is tough, there is a lot of waste, but we keep harvesting also to keep our hopes alive and to refrain from getting discouraged," says Mirco Zoffoli, salesman at Antonio Benzi's farm, taking stock of the strawberry plant located in Cesena, Italy.
"The Sibilla variety is very hardy, so it is holding up. If it had been another, more delicate variety, it would have all gone to waste. Instead, although we had to discard quite a bit, we have decent amounts of product to sell."
Strawberries that were exposed to the water on the sheets for a long time are losing resistance, while those in the middle of the plant have fewer problems.
"Right now, prices are also good because there has been a positive astral conjuncture that never occurs, with little product from Spain, the south of Italy being over, and Verona still not having large quantities. Therefore, strawberries from Romagna are in demand and prices are good."
Sunday, 21 May 2023 was a good harvest day thanks to the sunshine that made it possible to go into the fields, since almost all the number of days useful for harvesting had been lost due to heavy rains last week.
