Colombian avocado, lemon and lime season coming up

Uncertainty clouds the upcoming season for international fresh produce markets

A difficult period could be coming up for the Colombian avocados this year. Cesar Paolini, general manager of fresh produce exporter  Arcángel Miguel International SA, focuses on Hass avocados and Persian limes. "Our star product is Hass avocado, which accounts for the majority of our sales. We are also starting to export Persian limes. In addition, we offer other avocado varieties, citrus, and avocado oil maquila services."

The company's main market is Northern Europe, but they have also been exporting to the United States since last year. Paolini states they would like to enter new markets this season, "We would like to take advantage of the European lemon season for our Persian limes. We also see great potential in the Caribbean market. With avocados, we are always open to entering new markets. We are certified to export to South Korea and Japan and are eagerly anticipating our first exports to those markets. These markets are attractive because of their growth potential."

The avocado season has seen quite some volatility in terms of prices this year. Cesar noted that:  At the beginning of the year, avocado prices were very good for Colombia because production in Mediterranean origins was lower than expected. However, we are now entering a very complicated period, as Mexico is expected to have a much larger harvest than last summer, and Peru estimates having 15% more fruit than in 2022. It will be a challenging few months for all companies in the sector, as if consumption does not increase drastically, there will be an excess of supply."

Arcángel Miguel International SAS also offers maquila services for their products. Maquila, also known as contract manufacturing, is a common practice in the fresh produce industry, allowing companies to outsource the processing and packaging of their products to third-party providers. Paolini explained that: "Our maquila services are tailored to meet the specific needs of each client, providing them with a hassle-free and cost-effective way to process and package their products. We use state-of-the-art technology and follow strict quality control standards to ensure the quality standards are met." These maquila services allow the company to diversify its business while providing its clients with valuable services that can help streamline its operations and reduce costs.
