Europlatano recovers the Swiss market after pausing exports because of the volcanic eruption in La Palma

“Almost a year later, we're glad to report that we've resumed weekly shipments to Switzerland”

In 2016, the organization of banana producers of the Canary Islands, Europlátano, established itself in the Swiss market via Coop Suisse, one of the most important distribution chains in the country.

The process to secure the export of bananas to Switzerland was long and required a great investment of time and work. The regular shipment of bananas from the Canary Islands to the Swiss market became a reality after months of meetings, communications, test shipments, visits to the islands, and a lot of work by a team committed to the project.

However, after the volcanic eruption in La Palma at the end of 2021 affected the island's banana production, Europlátano and its Swiss customer agreed to pause shipments at the beginning of 2022 until they were able to comply with the chain's needs.

“Almost a year later, and thanks to the hard work of farmers, and the technical, quality, and commercial departments, we are glad to report that we have resumed weekly shipments to Switzerland. During these weeks, we've sent nearly 8,400 kg of certified bananas a week. We hope shipments will progressively increase until they get back to 2021 levels, a year in which 630,000 kg of Canarian bananas cultivated by Europlátano producers from the islands of Tenerife and La Palma were marketed in the Swiss market.”

“Exports to Switzerland have a very important value for farmers because, given fruit's quality requirements and the work maintaining them entails, producers are guaranteed a minimum price. This is an important incentive for the partners who believe in Europlátano's commercial strategy and understand having a quality product is the only way to differentiate it and achieve sustainable agriculture.”

"Finally, the management would like to thank Europlátano's producers and employees for their commitment, confidence, and hard work to recover this demanding market. We would also like to thank Coop Suisse's team, which knows our product, its quality, and its taste, for its understanding and its commitment to our banana and its people."
