Last week's anticyclone caused frosts at night and damage in several Spanish regions

"The anticyclone in Spain during the last days, which is responsible for the high daytime temperatures during Easter, has also caused a significant drop in temperatures during several consecutive dawns and caused frost damage to different agricultural productions in different areas," Agroseguro reported.

"The frost took place on similar dates to the frost of 2022. However, they had a much smaller impact than last year's frosts because the temperatures didn't fall as much as last year when the damages recorded in just three nights caused compensation in excess of 220 million euro, paid mainly to fruit growers in the Ebro Valley and almond producers in Castilla-La Mancha. Consequently, we estimate that the damages, which will be confirmed at the end of the different campaigns, will be much lower this year."

"In Alava and La Rioja the temperatures below zero affected vineyards, almond, plum, and cherry crops. Fortunately, the temperatures in the main fruit areas of La Rioja and Navarre didn't fall below zero so the crops present no damage. In the region of El Bierzo (Leon), the frost would have affected the pear crops.

"In Aragon, low temperatures have affected the regions of Cinco Villas, Hoya de Huesca, Calatayud, Zaragoza, Valle del Jiloca, and Bajo Aragon, which produce crops that are susceptible to affections, such as fruit trees (apricot, peach, nectarine, and pear), almond, and cherry. According to the producers, the antifreeze systems have been effective in areas with milder minimum temperatures."

"The high thermal amplitude of recent weeks has also caused pollination and curdling issues in apricot and nectarine productions in the Valencian Community."

"The high daytime temperatures in Castilla-La Mancha have contrasted with the below zero night-time temperatures, which have caused specific damages in the vineyard and almond farms in Albacete, Ciudad Real, and Cuenca."

"Meanwhile, the Canary Islands have suffered episodes of high temperatures, haze, and wind, which, despite not being extremely strong, have caused damage of various kinds in the crops of the western islands due to the joint action of heat and the continuous changes in direction and speed of the wind. The main damages have occurred in banana, tropical, and vegetable crops in La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria.
