"The quality of Hainan fruit is stable, but market demand this year is not as expected"

Because of its unique geographical environment and tropical climate, Hainan, China, produces most of its fruit from the end of October to the end of May, which makes it an important off-season fruit and vegetable producing area. In addition, many fruits widely planted in Southeast Asia have been developed on a certain scale in Hainan due to its similar climatic conditions, and they taste good.

"From March to April every year is the most stable period for Hainan fruit sales and tastings, and the market feedback is good," Joy Wang, from Shenzhen Xiyu Huaguoshan Agricultural Products Development Co., Ltd., told FreshPlaza.

The company takes "Xiyu Huaguoshan" as its brand, focusing on the cultivation and sale of cantaloupes. The company has orchards in Xinjiang and Hainan, and is now vigorously developing planting bases in Hainan, including cantaloupe, Guifei mango, pineapple and other Hainan specialty fruits.

"Thanks to the climatic conditions in Hainan, the fruits produced have a stable taste and are on the market earlier than other domestic producing areas. This is an important reason for our development of the Hainan base and the layout of fruits in different seasons. When the Chinese mainland market imposed access restrictions on some fruits produced in East Asia and Taiwan Province, China, some fruits originating from local areas developed rapidly in Hainan, and there has been an explosion of market demand in recent years. After comprehensive consideration, in addition to the core cantaloupe business in Hainan, we have successively developed several local representative fruits, such as mango and pineapple. These fruits are relatively stable in quality and sales volume, and the market reflects that. "

Several types of fruits produced in Hainan have been delayed in this year's market. According to Joy, due to the abnormal climate and cold winter, the fruit season has been delayed. In addition, from December last year to January this year, the pandemic caused shortages of labor in the producing areas. These two reasons have delayed the sales cycle.

Talking about the fruit market situation this year, Joy said: "At present, the actual market demand is not as good as expected. After the Spring Festival, we feel that consumption power has declined and consumers' sensitivity to prices has increased. On the other hand, with the increase in labor cost, the price of the fruit goes up. Therefore, compared with the same period last year, sales increased slightly but not as expected, and market confidence has yet to be restored."

Because of the fluctuations in the market, Joy emphasized the importance of fruit enterprises having their own brands, channels and customers, so as to minimize the uncertainties caused by market changes.
