In Vietnam, the durian market is currently experiencing significant price adjustments due to an oversupply and a decrease in demand from China. The price for Grade A Monthong durian has been set at VND113,000-115,000 per kilogram, with Grade B at VND93,000-95,000. Similarly, Ri 6 durian prices have seen a reduction, with Grade A now at VND81,000-86,000 and Grade B at VND66,000-68,000.
Nguyen Van Hung, a durian farmer from Tieng Giang Province, reported a substantial drop in the selling price of his durians from VND110,000 to VND80,000 per kilogram, facing pressure for further price reductions. The global market has been inundated with durians from Thailand and Indonesia, leading to a supply glut. Additionally, a slowdown in orders from China has exacerbated the decline in prices.
The Mekong Delta region, a key area for durian cultivation, is also grappling with a severe drought, adversely affecting fruit quality. Recent incidents of cadmium contamination have made traders wary, contributing to a cautious market atmosphere. Despite these challenges, traders speculate that prices will not fall below VND30,000 per kilogram due to an anticipated lower yield from the drought.
