In South Korea, strawberries have emerged as the top-selling fruit across major retailers, overtaking traditional favorites such as apples due to a surge in fruit prices prompted by climatic adversities.
This trend is highlighted by sales data from leading supermarket chains including E-Mart, Lotte Mart, and Homeplus, which have reported strawberries as the leading fruit in terms of annual sales since 2020, surpassing both domestic and imported fruit varieties.
Previously, E-Mart recorded apples as its best-selling fruit until 2020, but strawberries have claimed the top spot for three years running from 2021. Similarly, Lotte Mart has seen strawberries as its most popular fruit for four years straight, from 2020 to 2023, while Homeplus reported a shift in preference from tangerines to strawberries starting last year.
