Specialty growers doing spring preparations at Illinois farms

In Illinois, specialty growers are actively engaging in spring preparations. Tony Pferschy from Garlic Breath Farms in the northern region reports the commencement of planting 70,000 garlic bulbs and managing 5,000 to 10,000 plants, including peppers, tomatoes, and potatoes, within his residence.

In the southern part of the state, Austin Flamm of Flamm Orchards indicates a phased planting approach, initiated as soon as field conditions allow, to sustain production levels throughout the growing season. Flamm mentions the strategic use of high tunnels for early planting of certain crops like yellow squash and zucchini, although direct seeding remains a primary method due to its effectiveness at their scale of operation. Both producers acknowledge the positive impact of mild winter conditions and early spring rainfall on early season crops.
