Sustainable packaging solution presented for the first time at Biofach 2019

"Robust cotton nets, use again and again"

Instead of plastic bags there are also reusable cotton bags for fruits and vegetables. The renunciation of plastic goes hand in hand with a wave of new, innovative packaging alternatives. As part of these changes, Kerler GmbH presented its fruit and vegetable nets made of cotton for the first time at this year's Biofach. "The response so far has been particularly pleasing," says spokeswoman Johanna Keller.

Managing Director Josef Kerler and Johanna Keller at this year's Biofach, where the cotton nets were presented for the first time.

The innovative cotton fruit and vegetable nets are available as both conventional and organic products. Both variants unleashed a storm of questions in the course of the first presentation, coming mainly from the organic retail trade, said Ms. Keller. "Because of social discussions and the new packaging law, more and more consumers are waking up to the topic of plastics. As part of this, we are also currently seeing interesting sales potential for new solutions, such as our cotton nets. The advantage of our solution over other sustainable packaging is that you can easily wash the nets after use and use them again and again."

Robust mono-packaging
The multipath function and the robustness of the nets is not the only advantage of the new solution. After all, packaging is also an important means of advertising for customers, says Keller. "The nets are can be printed with different designs on demand. In the end, this also gives companies extra value, both for the respective companies and the merchandise." Finally - and this might be the biggest advantage - the nets are 100% cotton. It is therefore a pure mono-packaging instead of hybrid packaging with a plastic component, which are currently being offered in many places in the retail trade or at the POS. "Nevertheless, because of its robustness, the net is also suitable for products with a higher average weight, i.e. heavy purchases."

Even before the launch of the cotton nets, Kerler GmbH had been exploring the possibilities of sustainable packaging for a long time. Previously, a jute solution had already been successfully placed on the market. "With jute, however, there is the problem with the washability, although this packaging is still commonly." In this sense, the new cotton nets are an optimized solution. First, their price is heavily dependent on the number of units bought. Second, because of the advantages mentioned, the customer has significant added value."

Focus on advertising textiles
Kerler GmbH was founded in 2000 and has since devoted itself to the production of high-quality textiles of all kinds. In addition to promotional textiles for the food sector, the company also offers clothing for work, leisure or clubs, mostly from sustainable or reused materials. Since 2002, Kerler has also had branches in Zurich and Vienna, so the entire D-A-CH region can be supplied.
