Summer onion harvest brings joy to Kurigram farmers

In Kurigram, Bangladesh, local farmers have experienced a successful summer onion harvest, particularly with the N-53 variety, which is in high demand due to its quality. The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in Kurigram has been instrumental in this achievement, providing farmers with seeds, fertilizers, and financial support for labor costs. This initiative has supported approximately 800 farmers in the district.

A farmer from Koikuri village shared his positive experience with N-53 onions, noting a bumper yield and favorable market prices. Another farmer highlighted the efficiency of the N-53 variety, with fewer onions needed per kilogram compared to local varieties, and satisfactory profit margins from his harvest.

The DAE has expanded the land area for onion cultivation in Kurigram, with plans to increase farmer participation in the coming year. Former DAE Deputy Director Biplob Kumar Mohanta emphasized the importance of proper seedbed preparation and the potential of N-53 onions to enhance food taste and reduce import reliance.
