Germany: Firm skin potatoes the norm in 2012

The early potato season 2012 has started again in the regions Baden and Pfalz and in the federal state Lower Saxony. Compared to last year the total area in Germany remained unchanged. The potatoes, which were grown under nets and foil, are only meant for direct selling. The sales in Germany through the foodstuff trade will probably start in the middle of June.

The planting circumstances at the end of February and the beginning of March were good. After the period of change with warm and cold weather conditions the development of the harvest will be as normal. The growers have made all preparations in order to supply the trade with good early potatoes with a firm skin and of good quality.

Alois Keutmann, chairman of the 'Bundesvereinigung Erzeugergemeinschaften Kartoffeln', expects the foodstuff trade to adjust its assortment for the better part to the early German potato harvest. The consumer prefers sustainably grown potatoes from their own country.

The potato associations are calling to sell only consumption potatoes with firm skin. "The good experiences of the last few years have shown that to satisfy the quality requirements set by the consumer on local potatoes a potato with a firm skin will have to remain the norm in 2012 as well," as per Dieter Tepel, chairman of the Deutsche Kartoffelhandelsverband (DKHV).
