New tracking solution offers mobility, ease of use

In the past, RFID tracking providers have focused on the technical aspects of their solutions. While incremental innovations of this sort advance tracking capabilities, an RFID tracking provider has introduced a system that combines technical capabilities with an innovative approach to the entire system. In addition to the normal tracking capabilities typical of RFID systems, Intelleflex says their system has enhanced mobility and can change the way information is recorded, accessed and shared.

This week, Intelleflex unveiled their new CMR-6100 cellular reader as well as their ZEST data service. Both products promise better ways to track products which move through a cold chain, says Kevin Payne, senior director of marketing for Intelleflex.

“People find these products innovative,” he says, “ they don't expect this kind of visionary approach on how to manage a supply chain from a typical RFID company.”

The main innovation of the CMR-6100 reader is its ability to track information in settings where it has traditionally been difficult to monitor produce. It's designed as a self-contained system that can easily be deployed anywhere. This flexibility gives growers new options in how they keep track of produce.

“You can set up a mobile reader in the field to let the packing house know what's coming in and what condition it's in,” Payne says. “You can also relay that information to headquarters and the salespeople can know the volume and quality of that day's product.”

Because it doesn't need an additional software platform and only requires a cell signal to communicate with a cloud-based data system, it's very much like a 'plug and play' RFID tracking solution. If used in conjunction with the ZEST data service, the reader can provide information to many people across a variety of devices.

“Cloud-based solutions, like ZEST, are very common,” says Payne, “but for a supply chain solution, it's innovative. The advantage here is that you can access information anywhere you have a cell phone connection.”

The need for cold chain monitoring is evident, says Payne. As companies worry more about food safety and work hard to reduce waste, the utility of RFID tracking is obvious. But the ability to easily deploy that system, notes Payne, is Intelleflex's advantage.

“We're showing you can do something very cost-effectively,” he says, “and positively contribute to the bottom line.”
