Egypt: Misrpan transport optimistic about next 25 years

Misr Pan Transport celebrated 25 years in the business in December last year, having for many years been an agent for Dole Fresh Fruit they received through the Damietta port 75 shipments of bananas which varied between 50,000 and 70,000 cartons each.

The company handles all exports and imports and logistics for El Gebaly Fruit Company, delivering citrus worldwide. In the period from 1 Dec - 15 May, they ship 20 full loads of citrus to Russia and The Ukraine loading 2000 pallets each time, Misr Pan also handles all the domestic logistics from packing houses to ports.

Misr Pan also cover logistic operations for other companies taking containers to the EU, Russia and the Baltic states. In addition the company exports bulk phosphates to Australia.

The company are also involved in freight forwarding by air and road and do customs clearing for regular customers, Misrpan Transport Company handled the export 105,000 tons of citrus last season from El Gabalt Fruit Company worldwide by reefer vessels and reefer containers.

Misr Pan owner, Capt. Mohammed Deeb Esbetah, explains, "we are the exclusive Logistics agent for El Gebaly Fruit Compnay and handle all of their logistical needs."

Capt. Esbetah goes on to say that his company have also been involved in the export of fresh grapes and pomegranates for two years now. "These are shipped via air as well as in reefer containers, we export around 3000 tons of pomegranates per season."

Misr Pan exports almost 10% of the 180-200,000 tons of citrus shipped to Russia and 20% of the 100,000 tons of citrus shipped to The Ukraine from Egypt per year.

Capt. Esbetah puts his company's success down to constant investment and improvement, "we have invested in the logistics and packing houses and the introduction of bar-codes, certification as well as up to date equipment at the quayside."

"Misrpan Transport Company is one of the first freight forwarders in Egypt, we have the latest technology and our own offices Cairo and Alexandria. We learned a lot from our years as a banana handler and we are the only company to have a cold store inside the port of Damietta, allowing us to store around 1700 pallets inside the cold store before the arrival of the vessel which is only 20 meters from the wharf and this helps us to load a full vessel of 2000 pallets in one day only."

Last year Misr Pan loaded two of the largest vessels every to dock in Egypt, M/V Green Chile and M/V Humboldt Bay each one was loaded with 4000 pallets from Elgaly Fruit Company, this was achieved in only 3 days.

As with many other companies Misr Pan have suffered a lot since the Egyptian up-rising in January last year. Port strikes, fuel shortages and dangers on the road caused insecurities for the company.

Capt. Esbetah says that things are definitely improving, and is sure that after the Presidential Election in May things will settle down.

The Egyptian ports are still subject to strikes and demonstrations, which can leave containers on the dock for days with no access to electricity. Capt. Esbetah says that the people misunderstand freedom.

Nevertheless he remains optmistic about Egypt's future as well as that of his own company. "I am sure Egypt will be a successful country, it has many good things going for it. I am also immensely proud of my company and am sure I will still be here to celebrate our 50 year anniversary."
