US: Investigation reveals causes of listeria outbreak

An investigation into an outbreak of listeria in cantaloupes grown at Jensen Farms has concluded that the outbreak is likely to have occurred as a result of new processing equipment coupled with the implementation of a new washing technique that involved the use of water containing no added chlorine. To date the outbreak has resulted in 30 deaths and 133 cases of sickness across 26 states. It has also been responsible for one miscarriage.

The report also cast suspicion on the quality of third party audits carried out at the facility.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that the outbreak would not have occurred had their guidelines been followed.
