Bangladesh: Bumper production of vegetables ahead

Farmers of eight upazila under Habiganj district are expecting a bumper yield of vegetables this year due to favourable weather and necessary support they received from the authorities concerned. The department of agriculture extension (DAE) sources said, the farmers of the district cultivated 4500 hectares of land against the target of 4200 hectares set by the DAE. This year vegetables are being cultivated on 3400 hectares of land in Sadar upazila. Three thousand three hundred hectares of land in Madhabpur, 904 hectares in Chunarughat, 292 hectares in Nabiganj, 383 hectares in Bahubal, 485 hectares in Lakhai, 105 hectares in Baniachong and 107 hectares in Ajmiriganj upazilas. A total of 174990 tonnes of vegetables is expected to be produced in the district. This year gourd and tomato are being cultivated on 400 hectares of land in Sadar upazila. One hundred hectares in Madhbpur, 120 hectares in Chunarughat, 355 hectares in Nabiganj, 140 hectares in Bahubal upazila.

Record yield of vegetables in N-region

Another report from Bogra adds: Vegetables are grown aplenty in the northern region including Bogra. Markets are overflowing with various vegetables in this area. Agriculture extension department said a record amount of vegetables were produced this year in Rajshahi and Rangpur division. In this area, 1.0 million farmers have cultivated in 0.2 million hectares of land. They expect to grow 4.0 million metric tonnes of green vegetables. But they apprehend to lose 7-8 thousand crore taka this year because of high vegetable growth and lack of storage. Deputy Director (DD) of agriculture extension department said vegetables were cultivated in 1,37,325 hectares of land in Rajshahi and Rangpur this year.
