China: Lychee retail price drops by 30%

The weather is hot, and the fruit has entered its peak retail season. The lychee price has, however, dropped by 30% in comparison with the same period last year. The reason for this development is that several major production areas enjoyed abundant harvests this year, while the overall demand remained the same. Furthermore, because of the sudden increase in temperatures, early-season and late-season lychees entered the market around the same time. In addition, lychees can only be kept fresh for a short period of 3-4 days. In some production areas the lychee price is down to several 0.1 yuan [0.02 USD] and still people do not buy them. The overall price of lychees has dropped by 30% in comparison with the same period last year.
