Data published on German organic farming 2017

"Germany: "Organic farming, the upward trend continues"

Organic farming in Germany again grew significantly in 2017. This continues the positive trend. The organic acreage has grown by 9.7 percent. The number of organic farms has also increased, by 8.3 percent. This is evident from the annual reports on organic farming, that are available to the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture, Julia Klöckner, explains:

"Organic and conventional are ways of cultivation that can coexist well. How a farmer works and whether he chooses organic farming, is up to the entrepreneur himself. But it depends on the political framework, whether we lower barriers and encourage farmers to follow the path of organic farming. The figures prove that consumers are increasingly asking for organic products. The commitment of my Ministry is paying off. In the past legislative period, we have developed a future strategy for organic farming, on which we are now building. Our goal, which we have agreed on within the coalition agreement: 20 percent organic farming by 2030. Organic farming is an important pillar of the German agriculture and food industry, in addition to conventional agriculture. It has a firm place in our agricultural policy. It is important to me that organic farming and conventional agriculture are not played off against each other. That is why we have once again sharply increased the budget for promoting organic farming.”
