Director Paolo Comparini explained that "we needed to detach our products from the traditional logic, moving from sales by pallet to sales by the piece. The only way to do it while respecting OPO Veneto's sustainability and biodiversity was to opt for sustainable packaging."
Paolo Comparini from Consorzio Italì (managed by OPO Veneto) with OPO Veneto President Adriano Daminato with the new PLA biodegradable packaging for the evolved packed unwashed vegetable range.
Microperforated PLA bags were tested over 14 months. Single lettuce heads or vegetables are protected by a clear bag that is nice to touch and preserves product shelf-life thus reducing waste.

Labels are biodegradable as well and are attached to the bags using water-based glue. Packets can be processed using standard flow-packers and are available in two sizes for retailers and the H&R sector.
For PGI products, labels bear a QR-Code so consumers can learn about the history of every single product thanks to dedicated YouTube videos.
"This is only the start, as we aim at widening the range to include all other products. On top of making products more appealing, these solutions safeguard the income of producers."
