"Look at where your food is coming from"

Selecting foodstuff even more vigorously according to origin and production methods

Since 2017, Lidl Austria has been a partner of MUTTER ERDE, an initiative of the ORF and leading environmental protection organizations in Austria. This year's campaign is themed "Look at where your food is coming from". It is an attempt to stimulate consumers to choose their food even more vigorously according to origin and production method.

"Unfortunately, many customers today no longer know exactly how our food is produced. Our diet has a significant impact on our environment, climate and agriculture. Each of us can contribute to a sustainable agriculture through our purchasing behaviour. Together with MUTTER ERDE we want to create more awareness for this," says Christian Schug, Chairman of the Executive Board.

Together with MUTTER ERDE, Lidl Austria is raising awareness about the origin
and production methods of food.

Since 2014, Lidl Austria has also supported the association "Land Creates Life", focusing on the value and production conditions of Austrian food.

"Our local foods are precious to us. That's why we continue to expand our Austrian product range. And with success: In the past year, almost half of all items sold came from our branches in Austria - many of them in AMA or organic quality. This benefits our local farmers and producers," says Dennis Kollmann, Purchasing Manager at Lidl Austria. The fact that Lidl Austria attaches great importance to local food is demonstrated by these numbers: the company sold 350 million Austrian products last year alone, many of them of organic or AMA quality. There are already nearly 300 organic items in its range - especially in the fruit and vegetable areas. Above all, domestic agriculture benefits from this development, as there are more than 1,500 Austrian farmers and producers behind these products. In addition to this range, we are committed to additional measures for the sustainable production of food.

Various measures
Intensive agriculture affects the quality and texture of the soil. Only a responsible approach will ensure that the soil remains healthy in the long term. When cultivating fresh fruits and vegetables, different active ingredients are used to maintain the health of the crops. The residues of these substances on fresh fruits and vegetables are subject to strict legal limits. However, Lidl Austria goes one step further and has agreed with experts and suppliers not to even approach the statutory limits. "For our products, the residues can only amount to one third of the legal limit," says Dennis Kollmann, Purchasing Manager at Lidl Austria.
