BLE Market Report KW18/18

Availability of European apples declined

Apples
The availability of European products decreased and the quality left more and more to be desired. Native Jonagold and Elstar dominated this segment ahead of Italian Golden Delicious and Granny Smith. From France came mostly Jazz. The Royal Gala from Austria went for €1.45 per kg in Hamburg. The fruits from Europe made it difficult for overseas imports to enter the market, as they were simply cheaper. Nevertheless, it could not be denied that products from the southern hemisphere became more popular. In this area, New Zealand Royal Gala and Cox Orange dominated, ahead of Chilean Royal Gala and Elstar. Argentina and South Africa rounded off things. Sales were was generally smooth and without special highlights, so sellers barely had to modify their prices.

Pears
Demand covered shipments from South Africa, Chile and Argentina. Supplies were often adapted to warehousing options, so prices did not have to be changed often.

Table grapes
South Africa dominated events with numerous varieties; Chile and Peru completed it. From India exclusively Thompson Seedless arrived, appearing only in Hamburg and often going into food retail.

Strawberries
Domestic supply exploded. As a result of their increased availability, prices had to be reduced almost everywhere initially, because there was not enough demand.

Kiwis
The Italian, French and Greek fruits easily met all needs. Thanks to very constant sales, prices did not change significantly.

Oranges
As in recent weeks, Spain dominated with Lane Late and Navelate, ahead of Egypt with Valencia Late. With the high, summer temperatures the focus lay on articles for juicing.

Lemons
In the meantime, Spanish fruit from new yields appeared, which were handled at €28 per crate of 15 kg. Availability and demand were in harmony so that prices did not need to be modified much.

Bananas
Demand had slowed down overall. Often, supplies were adequately coordinated. As a result, prices remained stable.

Cauliflower
The presence of French and especially Italian lots was limited and the importance of the native and Belgian products grew. First Dutch lots appeared.

Lettuce
Ice lettuce continued to come in from Spain in a monopoly-like fashion. The first sparse indigenous offers appeared punctually. Supply was very manageable. Prices mostly went up a little.

Cucumbers
Domestic supply has continuously dominated the distribution of snake cucumbers. Supply was very manageable.

Tomatoes
The supply situation did not change significantly. Supply was usually sufficiently coordinated with a fairly lively demand. As a result, traders were usually able to fix prices at a relatively constant level.

Sweet peppers
The supremacy of the Dutch shipments increased. The influx of Spanish imports declined accordingly. The availability of Turkish and Belgian products varied, but insignificantly.

Asparagus
The situation has hardly improved. Enormous quantities from local fields crowded the markets. Demand grew, but inevitably there was an extreme oversupply. Prices dropped incessantly.

Onions
The levels of domestic goods were decreasing in some places, so that the distributors had to moderate their prices in order to achieve steady sales. The customers preferred to buy imports from New Zealand and Australia, so that these were occasionally too expensive for continuous sales.
