“Kids don’t know the difference between a real strawberry and its aroma”
Annabelle Delaval and Arnold Weislo are the authors of six different cookbooks which encourage people to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables. The series is called “Que faire de simple”. Annabelle believes that only a very few people consume enough fresh fruits and vegetables. “In today’s society, bad nutrition is a major problem. I want to share my love for cooking and healthy choices with as many people as possible.”

The French couple’s first cookbook, 'Easy and healthy ways to prepare fresh vegetables', has been translated into English and German. Annabelle: “We published our first cookbook ten years ago. It still is a bestseller. A lot of people want to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, but don’t know how to prepare them. I developed numerous recipes to inspire these people. The recipes are easy and guarantee a tasty meal. By encouraging people to eat more vegetables, we also want to encourage them to eat less meat.”
“Right now we focus on improving the healthiness of children’s food consumption. There are plenty of kids’ cookbooks which explain how to cook with chocolate or sweets, but what we really need is to teach them healthy lifestyle choices. Our recipes are simple enough for them to understand. They learn how to make an apple pie with lots of fresh apples and meals with broccoli or other vegetables. We make the recipes funny and add photos that show how to prepare the meals step-by-step.” The book is already used by different French health care institutions.
According to Annabelle, the most popular vegetables for children are tomatoes and carrots. “Their colour is more attractive than the colour of, for example, leeks, although in the end children seem to love this too. Some time ago I participated in a television broadcasting for France 2, and we prepared a plate with leeks together with some children. They refused to eat it. When our cameraman followed them to the kitchen later on, they were eating all that was left of it. They loved it.”
