Philippe Jean, Cofruid’Oc:

France: “Consumers fall back on apple varieties that are still available”

“At the moment we sell a lot of Tasty Granny and Pink Lady apples”, tells Philippe Jean, sales manager at the French company Cofruid’Oc. “Especially the demand for Pink Lady is very strong. For Tasty Granny, demand is acceptable. The pricing of the variety is better than in other years but not exceptionally good.”

According to Philippe, the reason for the current success of Tasty Granny and Pink Lady is simple. “The frost last spring caused shortages on the entire European apple market. Therefore consumers fell back on varieties that were still available. The Pink Lady and Tasty Granny apples are not as scarce as other varieties.”

Regarding the French apple market in general, Philippe says he is quite pleased with the results of the current season. “Altogether the French apple market is a smoothly-running market. Still, looking at the pricing of the more traditional varieties like Tasty Granny, Gala and Golden, the market is a little disappointing. The economic results are good enough to provide our producers with a good source of income, but considering the current shortages we would have expected the prices to be better.”
