Interest group presents the concept of the future to all companies at this location
Germany: Traders want to take over wholesale market in Berlin
The proposals for the further development of the wholesale market area in the Berlin Beusselstraße, have been met with increasing interest from the local dealers. After the initiators of the project, the IG LFC Berlin, at the beginning of February handed over their concept and offers to the responsible Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Enterprises, yesterday they presented it in a transparent way to all companies based on the wholesale market.

More than thirty other companies that were not yet active in the interest group accepted the invitation of IG LFC Berlin to come to the general information event on Wednesday morning. The core of the project is to take over of the entire market area of more than 320,000 square meters and to go for a holistic development as a "hotspot" for fresh goods. To this end, the interest group wants to acquire the building rights for the site from the federal state of Berlin, in order to set up a modern innovation and competence center for all fresh produce and foodstuffs at this location. The Großmarkt GmbH will then take over the new LFC Food and Fresh Food Cluster Berlin eG as a cooperative and partner of the state of Berlin.
During yesterday's event, IG LFC spokesman Dieter Krauß explained the proposals for future market design to the marketers, which in particular is about a sustainable overall concept for the communal location. There is still a lot of development potential in the eyes of the IG LFC. After the takeover of the site, plans include -among others- the implementation of construction and modernization measures for a total sum of more than 90 million euros. The construction projects include the conversion of a hall into a manufacturing center by the Markthalle Neun team.
IG LFC spokesman Dieter Krauss said, after the meeting: "As a marketer community with decades of market experience, we know the day-to-day demands of a wholesale market if it is to be modern and up-to-date. A smooth and successful market operation is only possible if the space is not simply rented out, but operated holistically in the interests of the marketers, and developed in a practical way. Here we want to be the caretakers, working for the interests of the marketers. Regardless of whether someone -as a member of the cooperative- is taking on responsibilities and risks, or whether one is simply ‘just’a tenant: all companies at the site should benefit from the fact that we make the wholesale market at the Beusselstraße fit for the future through our plans."
A landmark decision on the plans and the acquisition of leasehold rights by the
Berlin Senate is expected in the next few weeks. IG LFC Berlin was founded in the summer of 2017 at the Beusselstraße location by more than one hundred dealers. The aim is to take over the leasehold from the state of Berlin, in order to further develop the wholesale market area according to their own judgement.
At the site, more than two hundred and fifty companies with a total of more than 2,500 employees are working to ensure that Berlin, Brandenburg and neighbouring federal states are supplied with fresh food and other fresh produce every day.
