70 percent more expensive because of scarce supply of goods
Southern European cold causes price increase in cauliflower business
The low temperatures in southern Europe cause crop problems in Spanish and Italian growing areas. Especially in the cauliflower business, it is hardly possible for some producers to harvest the products, since the fields are still partially frozen. Because of the fact that the current supply is rather limited, there are already significant price increases in Swiss wholesale and retail.
Above all, there is a lack of so-called smaller sizes, according to Marko Dutler - buyer and seller of the Swiss wholesaler Mundo AG in Rothenburg. “We mainly distribute the products of about 700 grams each. Sometimes there are no goods in the desired sizes, either in Spain or Italy. But the quality of the goods is still very good.”
Dutler: “Our advantage is that we are a relatively small wholesale company and we mainly supply regional gastronomy and retailers. As a result, the supply is still sufficient for us at the moment." Right now, Dutler is not yet observing any significant price increases in the broccoli business. According to the latest information, one will probably notice price increases there as well from next week on.
