Colombia expects a large increase in avocado exports in 2018

According to statistical data from Agronet, Colombian avocado exports increased by 51%, going from 35.04 million to 52.9 million FOB dollars.  In 2017 Colombia exported 28,487 tons of avocado. The three main destinations in terms of volume were: The Netherlands with 35.7% of total shipments, Spain with 24.2%, and the United Kingdom with 23.7%.

While it is true that Colombia can supply avocados 12 months of the year, records have shown that the highest volume of shipment takes place in the last quarter of the year, with 33.4%, and in the second quarter, with 28.4%. According to Juliana Florez, the head of the Agua Hass company, which is located in the Department of Quindio, "the main season is concentrated in the months of September, October, and November. In addition, there is a small harvest in the month of April."

Agua Hass increased their export volume by 47.3%. In 2017 this had a good production and, according to Florez, "we expect to have a larger increase in 2018 thanks to new management crops techniques. Our soils have begun to have an important transformation, all their chemical elements have levelled, something that hadn't happened to us since we began sowing and developing the avocado crop."

"There's been an important transformation in sizes and we've managed to obtain a greater production of fruits that range between 16-18 and 20 gauges, which guarantees an increase in volume and better prices in the markets," she said. Regarding their expectations for the year 2018, she said "we have a plan for continuous improvement in all our processes to increase yields and reduce production costs."

"We continue our work focused on fertilization, integrated pest management and, above all, on the important commitments we have made to environmental management and the conservation of bees. In fact, we are beginning to market honey from the avocado flower under the name ABEHASS." Agua Hass is a socially responsible company that, in the words of Juliana Florez, "offers happiness and sweetness through ABEHASS. Our transparency and good practices identify us along the chain, we protect water resources and make sustainable use of land.
