France: 72.6% of fruits and 41.1% of vegetables have pesticide residues
72.6% of fruits and 41.1% of vegetables marketed in France have pesticide residues, and in some cases (2.7% for the former, 3.5% for the latter) at rates above the authorised limits.
These are the main conclusions of a study presented this week by the ecological association Generaciones Futuras, which pointed out in a statement that it is based on official data from the so-called "surveillance plans" carried out by the French anti-fraud agency (DGCCCRF) between 2012 and 2016.
The fruits that most frequently had pesticide residues were grapes (they were found in 89% of the samples analysed), clementines and mandarins (88.4%) and cherries (87.7%), followed by grapefruit, strawberries, nectarines-peaches and apples, also with percentages above 80%.
At the opposite extreme were avocados (23% of samples with pesticides), kiwis (27%) and plums (35%).
Nearly 7% of the cherries tested contained higher pesticide residues than authorised, and the same was true for about 5% of mangoes and papayas.
With regard to vegetables, some pesticide traces were found in 84% of the celery samples analysed, as well as in 73% of the endives and 71% of the lettuce.
Generaciones Futuras, which published this report four days before the opening of the Paris Agriculture Show, took the opportunity to ask the Government for "quick and effective measures for the promotion of organic farming" and to "strongly reduce the use of pesticides" in conventional crops.
