Julian Garcia, from Grupo TR FR Jacarilla:
"There's a lack of citrus for processing and prices are high this year"
The fall in yields in the current Spanish citrus season, which is due to a drought and other factors, has led to an increase in prices in the field, even though there isn't a high demand for these products, as in the case of lemons, which have yielded small sizes this season. The decrease in orange production in the Valencian Community has also been higher than expected.
The citrus processing industry, which plays an important role in these kinds of campaigns, is also noticing the increase fruit prices due to a lack of availability. "There is a lack of fruit, both for the industry and for direct sales," said Julian Garcia, from TR FR Jacarilla.
TR FR Jacarilla is a company from Alicante that has been selling citrus fruits to the industry for more than 30 years. "Even though producers plan their crops to obtain benefits from their sale in the fresh market, the citrus processing industry helps producers to sell the fruit that loses market value due to skin damage or deformations, and thus they can pay production costs," he said.
"We buy all kinds of citrus fruits to sell them to large and medium-sized processing companies for the production of juices, jams, sweets, etc. So long as the fruit isn't rotten or has pathologies that affect its flavor, after all these products are also intended for human consumption," he added.
The company has its own fleet of trucks; some of them have a capacity of 25 tons in bulk; others are container trucks with a capacity of 10 to 20 tons; and other trucks are used to transport the goods in big boxes. "Since we have different kinds of trucks, we can adapt the way we transport the product depending on how delicate it is. We can load the citrus directly in the field or in the warehouses," he said.
95% of what TR FR Jacarilla buys and sells are all types of citrus fruit. The company also works with table grapes and pomegranates. "We specialize in citrus, but we want to grow in other types of products to diversify our work. We plan to start working with stone fruit, so we can continue our business when there is little availability of citrus."
