France : January warmer and wetter than normal

The average temperature in France in January was 8.7°C, 3.4°C above the average. According to Météo-France, "this January broke the record held by January 1988 and more recently January 2014". In the North East temperatures were as much as 4.8°C above the average. The mild temperatures were accompanied by 68% more rainfall than usual (except in Corsica where a 46% decrease was reported). However, accumulated rainfall since the 1st September remains 7% below the average overall. This is particularly the case in the South East and Corsica with 41% and 37% decreases respectively.
